On 1 November 2026, Carlo Comporti assumed office as Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) – the European body that plays a leading role in protecting investors, ensuring the orderly functioning of financial markets, and maintaining financial stability.

“Carlo Comporti takes the helm of ESMA at a time when European capital markets stand at a crossroads. We face the challenge of fostering innovation and competitiveness, and at the same time strengthening Europe’s position as an attractive destination for investment, without compromising investor protection. I am confident that under his leadership, ESMA will continue to promote supervisory convergence while taking into account the specificities of national markets and the need for a proportionate approach,” said Vasil Golemanski, Chair of the Financial Supervision Commission.

“I am honoured to have been entrusted with this role at a time when ESMA is at the heart of discussions shaping the future of European financial markets. Now more than ever, ESMA plays a critical role in ensuring that European markets further develop and integrate, to support the needs of companies, investors and citizens. I am eager to join the ESMA team and collaborate directly with colleagues who contribute every day to such a dynamic organisation.” commented Carlo Comporti.

Prior to his appointment, Comporti served as Commissioner at the Italian supervisory authority, CONSOB. During this period, he also served as a member of ESMA’s Board of Supervisors and Management Board, chaired the authority’s Standing Committee on Digital Finance, and served on the Board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), where he chaired the Audit and Finance Committee.

From 2011 to 2022, Comporti served as CEO of Promontory Italy and Chief Operating Officer of Promontory Europe – a division of IBM Consulting. Prior to that, he held the position of General Manager of Promontory France.

In 2008, Comporti became Secretary General of the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR). He played a key role in its transition to ESMA in 2010-2011.
